BETWEEN ALICE SPRINGS AND THE ROCK IT'S OUTBACK TIME

Story and Photography by Darren Azeez

This was by far the best meal on the tour. I had the pleasure of eating a unique dinner of kangaroo meat, emu, camel and crocodile meat. Believe me, you'll have a hankering for Croc in a week's time. I really enjoy the taste of fine cuisine in a laid back, enjoyable setting with friends. And yes, the food was great, better than great. As we settled into dessert with apple pie and Pavlova (a popular Australian dessert) we were entertained by live music.
TRIP TIPS
Travel light with comfortable clothing. Hiking boots are highly recommended. Take lots of film and extra batteries for your camera.

Young Aborigine performer entertains Contiki group After dinner, the fun starts. Singing, dancing, didgereedoo (an Aboriginal wind instrument) playing begins. Waltzing Matilda is sung. Then the branding iron comes out. What was this fellow doing with a branding iron? I soon discover that he was branding anything that was denim or leather. I said no thanks, but I have pictures of other people getting branded. After a night of drinks at the bar, some folks took to swinging from the rafters. That was the way to end the night and close out a chapter of my life. A beautiful trip, with great people and the great outdoors.

GOODBYE, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
After sleeping in till 9a.m. (if only you could see the big smile on my face) it was time to pack my things up for the final time. I wander down the stairs to say goodbye to those who were continuing the trip up to Darwin.

The Contiki experience is one that is famous around the world. The tours are designed to be exciting and adventurous for the younger set (18-35). A great time awaits you in Australia. An even greater time is waiting for you in Alice Springs and "The Rock". And if you go, tell them both that Darren says G'day.
