Lakeville, Pa: Caesars Pocono Resort at Cove Haven,
America’s honeymoon capital, surprised my wife, Karen, and I, in more ways than
one.
We checked in at the front office, which featured a large Greek-style statue of
a nude male, and made our way to our suite at the Champagne Tower. From the
exterior it appeared rather non-descript, except for the figure of an ancient
Egyptian on the door, but once over the threshold there was no doubt that this
was something special. . |

At the center of the main room stood a seven-foot tall
Jacuzzi tub shaped like a champagne glass. The living room also included a
fireplace, television, coffee table and a large section sofa. The wall across
from the fireplace consisted of large glass windows that offered an atrium-like
view of the PRIVATE HEART-SHAPED SWIMMING POOL. This suite had everything!
The poolroom also incorporated a sauna and heated massage table. The bedroom, up
a flight of stairs, featured another TV, a VCR, table and chairs and a round
king-sized bed. Mirrors sparkled above the bed with pinpoint lights patterned
after the night sky. Caesars call it a celestial ceiling, and guess what?
There’s actually a dimmer switch that controls the starlight!
A second celestial ceiling shone above the Jacuzzi tub, which was surrounded by
mirrors on the walls. The setting reminded me of something straight out of an
Austin Powers movie. The bed, unfortunately, didn’t rotate. The bathroom,
adjacent to the bedroom, provided access to the champagne-tub, which was next to
a two-person steam shower. With all of the mirrors, plush red carpet and
lighting effects, the room may sound overdone, but somehow all of the parts came
together to form a tasteful package… in that Austin Powers sort of way.
After a four-hour drive from Maryland to the Pocono Mountains we were both tired
and frazzled so I filled the tub with water, cranked up the sauna and steam
shower and popped open a bottle of champagne. We jumped into the heated pool,
sipped the bubbly and paddled around. Sure enough the warm water dissolved the
tension from the drive and the champagne didn’t hurt either!
For some bizarre reason Karen likes to hop around like a bunny rabbit whenever
she’s in a shallow pool. She bounced around at random and occasionally pushed me
out of the way as I tried to unwind. We continued on up to the tub where Karen
had added three capfuls of bubble bath. Within minutes of turning on the jets,
bubbles threatened to engulf us and flow over the edge into the living room.
Oops! We averted disaster, however, by pushing the mountains of foam into a
suction jet. After ten minutes of foam disposal, only a thin layer of bubbles
remained and once again we felt relaxed.
Our foam herding was less than perfect. We each emerged from the tub covered in
bubbles. A rinse in the shower was needed before returning to the pool to cool
off for a few minutes. Next up - the sauna. Karen just loves saunas. She can
stay in one all day in temperatures that would melt steel. I, however, am what
Karen calls a “sauna wimp.” I only lasted about five minutes before overheating.
I felt like a piece of burnt toast. I returned to the pool and then headed up to
the steam shower. I’m better with the heat in the steam room, but I can only
handle a few minutes before plunging back into the pool. Karen finally emerged
from the sauna and commented that it could’ve been a few degrees hotter. What a
gal!
We repeated the cycle of pool, Jacuzzi, pool, sauna, pool and steam shower and
imbibed the remaining champagne. I looked at my watch and was amazed that we had
spent over two and a half hours playing with the room’s amenities. It had seemed
like only half an hour. Thus, we retired to our round bed with the mirrored,
celestial ceiling in our honeymoon suite. Although we aren’t newlyweds, the
romantic setting brought back a lot of memories. And after a bottle of
champagne, it sure felt like our honeymoon beneath the twinkling stars of the
mirrored ceiling. And as Austin Powers would say, “Yeah Baby!”
FUN-FUN-FUN IN THE POCONOS
Caesars has four Pocono resorts, three for couples only (Cove Haven, Paradise
Stream, Pocono Palace) and one for families (Brookdale.) Each resort includes a
variety of accommodations as well as a plethora of available activities. The
resorts include nightclubs, arcades, billiard parlors, ice skating, roller
skating, exercise facilities, spas, tennis, miniature golf, cafes and
restaurants. Breakfast and dinner are included in room packages.

A daily activity sheet is posted each day. Famous comedians, such as George
Carlin, often appear at the nightclubs. There’s also a lake for water skiing,
sailing, fishing or just paddling around. Warm weather activities also include
golf, bicycling, in-line skating, volleyball and complimentary horseback riding.
Of course, the Pocono Mountains contain numerous hiking trails and spectacular
fall foliage.
Several nearby towns, such as Hawley, are ideal spots for shopping and
antiquing. In the winter, guests can go snow tubing and snowmobiling and Caesars
resorts are minutes from nearly a dozen ski resorts, including four major ski
areas for serious skiers: Jack Frost/Big Boulder, Montage, Camelback and Elk
Mountain.
JUST FOR NEWLYWEDS
A honeymoon specialist is available to help newlyweds make the most of their
time at the resort by suggesting individual itineraries and arranging for any
specific activity, such as whitewater rafting or taking a turn at driving a
racecar at the Pocono Speedway.
The resort also contacts couples several weeks prior to their arrival and offers
suggestions on the correct clothing to pack and the best way to travel to the
resort. Honeymooners may also wish to participate in a version of the Newlywed
Game with a chance of winning a free stay at the resort and other prizes.
If you’ve been married less than a year, you will receive special bonus gifts to
honor the occasion.
And it doesn’t really matter if it’s your honeymoon, romance is always in the
air at Caesars Pocono Resorts.
