RIO DE JANEIRO'S ISLAND OF LOVE

Story and Photography by Pamela A. Campbell

Ilha de Paqueta, Rio de Janeiro: An island for lovers? Yes, right in the heart of Guanabara Bay.

This idyllic tiny island, approximately 682sq. miles, is ideal for a quick getaway from the crowds in Rio, especially if you are with the love of your life - maybe that's why it's known as the "Island of Love."

It takes all of 20 minutes for an exhilarating ride by hydrofoil across Guanabara Bay. I poke my head through the front window and enjoy every minute of the crisp fresh air caressing my face as wisps of hair fly every which way. Freedom flows with the wind and we are on our way to another world.

There are no cars on Paqueta Island, only charretes (gaily decorated horse-drawn carriages) and bicycles. There are no pavements, only mud and gravel, with tree-lined

TRAVEL TIPS

Plan a day's excursion, pack a picnic lunch and after exploring the neighborhood, go to the park for a leisurely afternoon.

The hydrofoil departs from the Praca Quinze de Novembro Square. Plan to get there ahead of the departure time and spend some time taking in the sights on land and water (check out our photo of the lovely little tugboats moored in the harbor).

streets exuding all the charm of a sleepy little village. The pace is slow, the scenery is captivating.

If you believe in love, don't miss this one. Just along the main street there's an Imbondeiro Macho tree (also called Obaoba), 1,628 years old, and the story goes that if you kiss its trunk and make a wish it will come true. Perhaps if you and your loved one share the same wish, it will come true.

The ever-present beauty of nature is everywhere on this island, especially in the park. It is truly a paradise that seems hand-carved by Mother Nature herself. Atop the lookout point a panoramic view unfolds - there's the governor's residence on Moreninha Beach, Bocoeo Island and Fiscal Island (the last ball was held in its miniature palace before the fall of the Empire).

You can get carried away by some of the stately facades of the homes painted in white and pastel shades. If only you had a million dollars or so stashed in the bank, because some of the really nice properties are in that price range.

If you believe in fantasy, join me as I share my ecstatic discovery with you - a tunnel of love - well, not exactly, but if you use your imagination, well........ I tried to capture it with my camera, so you be the judge.

Maybe next time I'll have a true love story to tell. Until then, you'll have to be content with my photo memories. Enjoy!
