FAB FOUR CITIES IN NEW BRUNSWICK ARE PERFECT FOR A CANADIAN VACATIONI A recent trip to New Brunswick in Canada’s Maritimes turned up four wonderful vacation destinations, the cities of Fredericton, Saint John, St. Andrews and Moncton. If you like small towns, check them out!

FEEL THE HEAT IN DAYTONA BEACH I just can’t get over Daytona Beach! On or off the water, it’s pure fun, and there’s heat without humidity, which I really like.

CREATIVE JUICES FLOW IN MINNESOTA’S STILLWATER Close to the Twin Cities of St. Paul/Minneapolis is a much less busy and probably more “artsy” city called Stillwater. Downtown Stillwater sits along the St. Croix River where riverboats are lined while the city is amassed with antiques, crafts, restaurants and art galleries.

ISRAEL – LAND OF MILK AND HONEY Israel, the Promised Land of the Bible, is today a modern, thriving, bustling and vibrant country. In today’s Israel, cities, towns, villages, fertile farms, green forests, sophisticated industries and well-developed commercial enterprises have replaced barren hillsides, swamps and desert wilderness.

NORWAY LOVELY NORWAY The history of the Vikings is closely linked to their role as masters of the sea. For more than 200 years (from 800-1050AD), the Vikings were feared as fierce and ruthless pirates. But this is not the full story. The Vikings were also poets, lawmakers and artists. Their ships explored unknown seas, and they settled new lands.

THE HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS OF SCOTLAND At the time in Scottish history when “ Loch Lomond” was a new song, the United Kingdom ( Scotland, England and Wales) had already been formed. The Highland Scots wanted a Scottish, not an English King to rule and led by their Bonnie Prince Charlie (Prince Charles Edward Stuart) they attempted unsuccessfully to depose Britain’s King George II. An army of 7,000 Highlanders were defeated on April 16, 1746 at the famous “Battle of Culloden Moor.”

GLITZ AND GLAMOR AT MIAMI’S BAL HARBOUR VILLAGE Few places in the world have it all. But, Greater Miami and the Beaches boast that they have it all. There’s the big city excitement with international restaurants, non-stop nightlife, an arts and cultural scene and blocks and blocks of open-air shopping paired with enormous malls and marketplaces featuring dining and entertainment.

STRATTON SO GOOD…….YOU’LL CRY! I’ve skied nearly all of the resorts in the Mid-Atlantic. I’ve skied out West, big resorts in New England , in Canada and in the French Alps. All of the mountains have been great in different ways, however, I always end up comparing everything to Stratton Mountain in Vermont . For someone like me who loves long and steep groomed trails, Stratton can’t be beat.

IT’S SHOWTIME IN ORLANDO There’s something about Orlando that won’t let me and 50 million visitors forget how great it is. Perhaps it’s because there’s so much to discover every time I go there. I’ve spa-ahed myself silly, shopped ‘til I dropped, enjoyed cultural outings, visited gardens and museums and most of all, soaked up the warm sunshine.

A VISIT TO THE HEART OF HAWAII Oahu is home to famous Waikiki Beach , world class restaurants, resorts and “Heart of Hawaii.” Honolulu is the capital city and has the distinction of being the 11 th largest city in the United States.

GETAWAYS FOR THE GIRLS: JASPER TEACHES CHRISTMAS ARTS IN NOVEMBER (NC)-If you have always wanted to perfect the art of entertainment at holiday time, there may be no better coach - and no better seasonal inspiration - than the annual Christmas In November event at the Jasper Park Lodge.

VAIL TO MUSIC IN COLORADO’S ROCKY MOUNTAINS Every year something wonderful happens in the heart of the Rocky Mountains . Colorado ’s world-class winter destination magically transforms itself into from season to season.

MISSISSIPPI SMALL TOWNS Jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, country and gospel music can trace their roots back to the Mississippi Delta. Tupelo , Holly Springs and Oxford are gracious reminders of that era, but there is much more to these small towns as I discovered during a recent visit

HOLLAND IS FOR ART LOVERS When you think of Holland many charming pictures come to mind - wooden shoes, tulips and canals, but one thing too few people focus on when they think of Holland is art.

CULTURAL TREASURES OF SAN JUAN On his second voyage to the new world Christopher Columbus discovered Puerto Rico, an island between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. It is east of the Dominican Republic and 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. After his brief stay in 1493, Columbus sailed away in search of other lands.

In Search Of The Last Samurai in KyotoIt was at KYOTO STUDIO PARK TOEI MOVIE LAND where I met my samurai Lee Murayama who has his own website: www.lee-murayama.com . He was an actor in the movie “The Last Samurai” starring Tom Cruise, which was filmed in Kyoto.

Giraffic ParkTheir booming calls are not exactly lullabies. But it only took a split second to wake up with my heart pounding from the sound of breaking twigs outside my tent.

The Count Who Likes CompanyPortugal is an independent kingdom since 1143, establishing its continental frontiers in 1297 and is one of the oldest nations in Europe. Situated in the extreme southwest corner of Europe, Portugal occupies roughly one-sixth of the Iberian Peninsula and has a population of just over 10 million. Its geographic location along the Atlantic Coast soon determined its vocation to the sea.

IRISH CHARMS Charming Dublin, the capital of the republic of Ireland and Ireland’s largest city with a population of 1.5 million welcomed me with open arms. Dublin is a delight to explore with its youthful pulse, but steeped in ancient history and culture with Medieval, Georgian and modern architecture.

MUSEUM HOPPING IN DALLAS The Lone Star State’s cultural attractions are as varied and as “big” as the state, so many that only a fraction of the museums can be seen on one visit, so here’s some of the best.

BEST OF LITTLE ROCK Bill Clinton rose to fame as the Governor of Arkansas, then as the 42nd President of the United States. Because of his fond memories as the state’s Governor he chose to have the $165 million William J. Clinton Library and Museum located in Little Rock.

VIVA LAS VEGAS “It’s damned amazing”, I said as I looked down at the base of Hoover Dam.  “Pretty damn high too!” I walked across the top of the dam with my wife, Karen, and our friends, Gene and Betsy, to the view of Lake Mead.  “That’s an awfully big damned big lake,” I noted. That’s when they started to hit me. “Stop it DAMMIT!”  I yelled. Karen pinched me under the ribs until I yelped like a girl. Some people just don’t enjoy good puns.

ALL THIS AND MORE IN GEORGIA Georgia can be described as a world-class destination.  All eyes were on the state when the G8 Summit was held on Sea Island, part of Georgia’s Golden Isles along the Atlantic coast and in 1996 when Atlanta hosted the Olympic Games.  Most recently a tour took us through some not-so-familiar parts of Georgia, each with their individual charm and beauty.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER TOWNS Nestled along the beautiful banks of the Mighty Mississippi River in historic Northeast Missouri are the three dynamic communities of Hannibal, Louisiana and Clarksville. Linked by history, heritage and Route 79, these communities also offer professional artists a unique opportunity to live and work. “50 Miles of Art” is an arts corridor where fine artists, draftspersons and artisans use their skill to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF LEWIS & CLARK THROUGH MISSOURI The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 brought the young republic of the United States a vast western territory. President Thomas Jefferson was determined to send an expedition to explore the huge wilderness area that had now become part of the nation.

DELRAY BEACH – ALL AMERICAN CITY Delray Beach is a resort community offering its residents and visitors simplicity and a relaxed pace. It’s a village by the sea, which has evolved from its modest agricultural roots innto one of the county’s premiere areas to live, work and play.

MAGICAL MYSTICAL SAVANNAH We wish everyone could be introduced to Savannah the way we were….in fine style at the Foley House Inn. Lucky for us, lawyers-turned-innkeepers, Beryl and Donald Zerwer, had traded courtrooms for guestrooms at their inn located in the city’s Historic Landmark District.

LEAFY TIMES IN WEST VIRGINIA It rained. Rained and rained and rained. Our little weekend getaway to view the fall foliage in Greenbrier County, West Virginia was getting off to a rather, soggy start. Greenbrier County lies in the southeastern corner of West Virginia along the Virginia border.

ELEANOR'S LITTLE VILLAGE It was their paradise. It was her crusade. Today it is a living history museum that traces the fascinating connection between a West Virginia community and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s.

ANNA BROWN. THE POTTER FROM MORGANTOWN Lively and entertaining, Anna Brown runs Brown’s Creations In Clay from her ancestral home on Bull Run Road, where her “studio” is a barn extension that includes the kiln where she fires the pottery.

FALL IN LOVE WITH MORGANTOWN
West Virginia boasts a state that’s “wild and wonderful” and they are so right, especially if you’re visiting Morgantown “The Best Little City in the East” (of the Mississippi.)

BUFFALO SPREADS ITS WINGS The “Queen City” has something for everyone. Located in the North Eastern part of the U.S., the port city of Buffalo is located on the Niagara River at the northeast end of Lake Erie. It is only 25 miles from Niagara Falls, Canada, one of the natural wonders of the world.

THE CULTURAL SIDE OF MEMPHIS Memphis is a vibrant city of musical history, diversity and Southern hospitality. Despite its rapid development, Memphis has retained the charming, unhurried approach to life characteristic of the south.

MUSICAL NOTES FROM LOUISIANA The Louisiana Music Trail takes you down to the heart and soul of jazz, blues/rhythm and blues, rock’n roll (rockabilly), Cajun/ Zydeco, gospel, country/bluegrass and much more. The focus is music.

WINTER ADVENTURE IN YELLOWSTONE COUNTRY Montana is variously nicknamed The Land of Shining Mountains, The Treasure State and Big Sky Country. Each name tells part of the story about this land of majestic alpine vistas, rich mineral deposits and seemingly endless skies arching over miles of forests, farm lands, prairies, rivers, lakes and badlands.

WASHINGTON WANDERINGS Washington is the “Evergreen State” and a photographer’s dream where scenic beauty appears around every corner. The Walla Walla valley is a rainbow of vistas where golden hillsides melt into broad expanses of crimson fields and lush evergreens cast shadows over backcountry trails during the noonday sun.

EUFAULA'S PRESENCE IS HER PAST After a trip down the Chattahoochee River retracing history along the way (thanks to storyteller and guitarist Billy Winn), I’m eager to find out what makes Eufaula so special (apart from the greatest bass fishing on the lake.)

THE WESTVILLE STORY The massive Singer Gates at the entrance welcome visitors into a village environment, re-created to function as a typical community from that era. Fred Rembert coined the classic nickname calling them “the gates to the past” for within these 58 acres are structures filled with some 5,000 artifacts reminiscent of the pre-Civil War years.

MYSTICAL LAND OF INDIA At first, the Powers That Be at Designer Monthly had thought that a good summer jaunt for the Armchair Decorator might be a little trip to Afghanistan to continue my global search for housewares from around the world. As determined, as I am to pry myself from the relatively snug corner of New York City that I call home, this was just too much.

SUMMER IN SAINT-SAUVEUR If you want to really enjoy the area the four-star logwood hotel is a perfect spot to spend some time - it’s perched at the top of the mountain with a picturesque view of the Valley of Saint-Sauveur located in the Laurentians.

GERMANY’S BLACK FOREST The town of Furtwangen, despite its rather clunky name, is known for the curative effects of its climate, so I figured I'd be right at home there, or at least closer to home than tromping around in some jungle. Perhaps there's a spa...

ESCAPE TO SALZBURG Like a flirtatious and beautiful woman, Salzburg has a reputation. Like it or not, Mozart would just be Mozart and there would be no Mirabell Palace to intrigue visitors.

FOREVER VIENNA Although Vienna is about 7,000 kilometers from Toronto, a continent away, my visit begins immediately. I hear a lovely voice bidding me “Willkommen” (welcome) as I prepare for the eight-hour flight aboard Austrian Airlines, the national carrier.

IRRESISTIBLY YOURS, INNSBRUCK Once in 1964, and then again in 1976, the world watched as thousands of athletes vied for gold medals at the Winter Olympics in this Alpine city. And for over 500 years The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) has continued to captivate the gaze of millions.

MUSEUMSQUARTIER WIEN: A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE Vienna’s class act has risen to world-class levels among the top 10 cultural districts since the opening of MuseumsQuartier Wien last year. To date, more than 1.4 million visitors have explored the cultural district and many of them plan to return again.

BLAZING THROUGH MISSOURI WITH JESSE JAMES Of all the world's legendary characters, few have attracted worldwide fascination like the outlaw, Jesse James. Some call him America's Robin Hood, one of America's most infamous and beloved outlaws; while others see him as a cold-blooded killer.

DISCOVERING THE FIRST STATE: DELAWARE Delaware's natural beauty, rich history and cultural attractions lured me to the state. Governor Ruth Ann Minner did too with the promise of magnificent sights like the sun rising over the Great Dune near Lewes and a great blue heron as it takes flight from Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge.

ENDLESS BEAUTY: THAT'S BVI Every one of the 60 islands, rocks and cays that form the BVI are sunkissed and splashed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and are as alluring as the emeralds and sapphires that often mirror their beauty.

LIFE'S A BREEZE AT FAIRWINDS My wife, Karen, and friends lounged around the sides of our private pool 15 feet below. Such a perfect setting could be completed by only one thing-a cannonball. I climbed over the railing, eyed the center of the pool as my target and leapt into the air.

PORTLAND CITYSCAPE In an effort to document the land and animal life in the newly acquired Louisiana territory and establish a water route to the Pacific, the president appointed Meriwether Lewis & William Clark to lead a 44-man expedition up the Missouri River.

THE GALAPAGOS: THEN AND NOW Located in the Pacific Ocean 600 miles west of South America and 800 miles southwest of Panama, the islands have belonged to Ecuador since 1832. They are officially known as the Archipielago de Colon, but many simply call them the Galapagos.

A CULTURAL CROWN JEWEL: MEXICO CITY This is a wondrous, exotic, mysterious and international metropolis of infinite variety and one of Latin America's key centers of finance and art. It blends old and new worlds and is dynamic, colorful and extraordinary.

GOING DUTCH The sea, together with lakes and swamps, once covered two-thirds of the country. With the help of windmills the Dutch "created" this land by pumping out the water. The Dutch justly take enormous pride in this accomplishment.

GERMANY - A MUSICAL INTERLUDE Be it an oompah band in Bavaria, the wildest techno-club in Berlin, a Beethoven symphony played by a world-class orchestra, an all-American musical sung in German or an opera at Bayreuth,a vacation in Germany is filled with music.

MAGICAL CHRISTMAS IN THE OZARKS The Branson Lakes area is located in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, only 35 miles from Springfield, Missouri where my TWA flight from St. Louis landed. The city of Branson was founded in 1881, and the downtown area has more than 20 historic sites dating back to the early 1900s.

MEMORIES OF MISS AMERICA IN ATLANTIC CITY The stakes are high in "America's Favorite Playground" especially if you are among the 51 contestants vying for the Miss America crown in Atlantic City.

FUN SPOTS IN AMERICA'S FAVORITE PLAYGROUND These days it's not just the seaside resort that attracts tourists who have been traveling here since 1854. Thirty seven million odd visitors discover this year-round destination for its entertainment, history, outdoor fun and special events.

TO BE BORN WELSH Most of the Welsh have descended from people who began settling in the British Isles thousands of years ago. Early settlers were the Iberians and later arrivals were the Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Englishmen who invaded Wales.

FLAMES AND FURY FAN THE WINDS OF CHANGE AT MESA VERDE Mesa Verde. Co. Mesa Verde National Park is a survivor, especially when it comes to fires. The years were 1934, 1959, 1972, 1989, 1996, and most recently two eruptions in the year 2000, July and August.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD AT UTE MOUNTAIN TRIBAL PARK Be prepared to climb five ladders, and walk three miles on unpaved trails if you are planning an all-day tour the promotional literature says. I think the headliner should read simply, "Prepare to be amazed."

NEWPORT AND THE GILDED AGE Rhode Island was always a Mecca for wealthy Victorian Americans, Newport in particular being chosen as an ultimate summer retreat destination. From its roots as one of the three most important ports in Colonial America during the 1700's, Newport grew to become the summer playground for several hundred families who possessed more than 80% of America's wealth during the late Victorian period.

A SEASON OF MEMORIES - THAT'S ITHACA An invitation to discover Ithaca and Tompkins County uncovers its historic past and some great spots in the heartbeat of the Finger Lakes region.

BONHOMME SIZZLES AT CARNAVAL DE QUEBEC Like fine wine, the Carnaval de Quebec (Quebec Winter Carnival) exudes a warmth that envelops your body and soul during the 17 days of revelry that rivals Rio and New Orleans. Before you know it you'll be saying, "Cheers to winter" along with the million visitors who will join in the fun.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY - ITHACA'S CLASS ACT One of Ithaca's proudest moments must have been in 1865 when Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White founded Cornell University.

RIO, LOVELY RIO This Brazilian city of seven million Cariocas (as Rio's residents are called) pulsates to its own beat every day of the year. Besides the samba, they adore soccer, but they also treasure the three "Bs" - beaches, beer and beauties in bikinis!

SANTA TERESA - RIO'S FAIRYTALE NEIGHBORHOOD As we wandered the curvaceous streets, footsteps echoing against the cobblestones, I have to remind myself I am in South America, not Europe. There is a certain tranquility that pervades the air around the residential homes, but the intricately designed facades are as eye-catching as a kid in a candy store.

TALLAHASSEE - FLORIDA'S STATE CAPITAL I was in Tallahassee to attend Florida State University's "Seven Days of Seven Nights" - the annual performing arts festival. An invitation from Tallahassee extended my visit to include "2000 Tour of Tallahassee" celebrating Black History Month.

COFFEE PLANTATION LEGACY LIVES ON IN BRAZIL The coffee barons probably never dreamed their plantations would see glory days again, but this time it's a work of art - preserving the rich, colorful history that transcended throughout the land, leaving a remarkable legacy for the people of Brazil and their visitors.

RIO DE JANEIRO'S ISLAND OF LOVE This idyllic tiny island, approximately 682 miles, is ideal for a quick getaway from the crowds in Rio, especially if you are with the love of your life - maybe that's why it's known as the "Island of Love."

AUSTRALIA'S CAPITAL CITY HOSTS MORE THAN POLITICS Canberra, New South Wales - In the traditional Aboriginal language Canberra means "meeting place" but it is also know as ACT, "Australian Capital Territory." It's quite common for Sydney to be mistaken for the capital of Australia, but all the parliamentary buildings are in Canberra, as the sign towards "The Capital City of Australia" clearly states

AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL As a young Canadian the image of war is immortalized in stories, and I must rely on historical data and artifacts to remind me of the many young soldiers who fought for freedom, something we all take for granted today.

QUEBEC CITY - CHARMING AND UNFORGETTABLE What makes a city tour fun? A guide with a sense of humor with a strong French accent who takes us along on a lighthearted historical ride through his wonderful city.

Ocho Rios - Jamaica's North Coast Beauty - Ocho Rios in Spanish means "Eight Rivers" but local interpretation maintains a reference to Las Chorreras (the waterfalls), since these phenomenal beauties draw thousands of tourists to the area year round. Two main attractions are the famous Dunn's River Falls and the lesser-known Eden Falls at The Ruins restaurant.

Jamaica - Let's Get Together Island Style - Jamaicans are proud of their homeland, and they are splendid ambassadors of true Caribbean hospitality. Every year thousands of people from around the world sign up for the program and find themselves befriended by over 400 volunteer families in Jamaica.

Jamaica - Gardens by Nature and Design - A recent visit to Kingston, Jamaica's capital, included touring two botanical gardens. They are open to the public and you can wander around on your own.

Cranbrook Flower Forest - A Jamaican Oasis - A rather interesting feature of this garden/park is that the nature trail leads into the rainforest area on the property. At the end of the trail I was genuinely surprised and fascinated by the beautiful "cathedral-like gorge" where the sparkling waters of the Cranbrook River surge and flow over the rocks, amidst the tropical vegetation.

Taj Mahal - India - If there is a single object to represent India in the same way that the Eiffel Tower does for France, it can be none other than the Taj Mahal, the Monument of Love. The white-marbled edifice peeping out of every brochure, every literature on India has become such an integral part of the country that a visit to the Taj Mahal, or Taj as it is better known, has become synonymous to a visit to India.

Cyprus - Part One- known as Aphrodite's Isle, this mythological goddess of beauty chose this island as her playground.

Cyprus - Part Two- visit the capital, Nicosia, a city bursting with culture, history and weekly celebrations.

Discovering Columbus in Georgia - Gone are the days of a western frontier town, its claim to fame as home to Columbus Iron Works, supplier to the Confederacy of the cannons and ironclad ships that fueled the Civil War. Columbus has emerged as the second largest city in Georgia, irresistibly appealing with its small-town charm - the century old homes and wide, tree-lined avenues, picture-perfect with their Victorian gardens nestled along the banks of the Chattahoochee River.

Hong Kong - China's Latest Bargain - shop, shop, shop or visit the floating markets and restaurants. For solitude in the midst of nature, visit Lantau Island.

Poland - Part One - a country of surprising beauty and a new destination for travellers.

Poland - Part Two - Krakow - a city of historical monuments not damaged by war. This story includes tips on dining and where to stay.

Seaside ~ It Was Fun Getting to Know You!  - A once sleepy beach town where tin rooftops catch the eye with their symmetrical peaks and distinctive towers define Seaside's trademark features, it's northwest Florida's most famous town decked with colorful cottages, widow's walks and some of the most ornate towers I've seen in a single community.

Stockholm, Sweden - a city sitting on islands and inlets with beaches and canals. Wander in the underground subway which is referred to as the largest art gallery in the world

Turkey - the Black Sea Region - Part Two - Explore charming, coastal Mediterranean villages made of stone and surrounded by tea plantations.

Where Time Stands Still In The Sun - Ambergris Caye - meet the locals and join in the fun at this little-known part of the world. Located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea.And not saturated with tourists.

Panama - The Crossroads of the World - The canal has assumed the most popularity in all of Panama. I was highly impressed on my visit to the 'Eight Wonder of the World' by the sight of the canal's innovative system of locks as they raise and lower massive ships over 80 feet, the height of a seven-story building.
